Amazing Generosity

This week being lovely MCAS week, I was able to spend some time catching up on my thank you cards.  As I was looking through the list of donors and donations I have received, I was struck by people's unbelievable generosity.  There are so many causes and organizations that need our money these days that it can be hard managing and deciding which ones to donate to.  I know I am not the only person in my donors' and prospective donors' lives raising money for a charity.   Despite this, I have received an overwhelming amount of money from friends and family.  It really is so touching to think about how many people know what I am doing and decided to dig into their own pocket and help.

As I found myself writing the same thing over and over in my thank you cards I started to get worried that I might sound a bit generic.  But then I thought about the words I was writing and realized that they are so genuine, despite their frequent over-use.  I really am so thankful that people have donated money to my run for CJ!  I really do truly appreciate the support and help that I have received from so many people!  I counted up how many donors I have so far, and I have about 65.  This is just counting how many donations I have received, this doesn't factor in families and friends who sent a donation together.  If I were counting the total number of people involved in my contributions, I am sure that I would have over 200!

OVER 200!  Just to help CJ and Dana Farber and support me as I run.  That is incredible to me!  That's just the start too, I know.  I have many other people who have told me they'd donate but haven't yet.  I can't even imagine, by the end of this whole process, how many people will have lent their hand, wallet, kind words, and smiles of encouragement to help!  It's pretty powerful when I really stop and think about how many people are behind this - whether for me, for CJ, for Dana Farber, for cancer in general - they're there.  Wow!

Well, I'm broker than broke right now (and about to move and about to be unemployed), so I definitely don't have the dollars to offer up at the moment, but I'm giving $1 million in encouragement and enthusiasm!!! :)

True generousity is a rare thing indeed. And to recognize it---and, more importantly, appreciate it---is even rarer.

p.s. Are you taking post-marathon donations???
